Jobless rate down to 9.1

Morocco's 2009 unemployment rate dropped to 9.1%, down from 9.6% in the previous year, said the High Commission for Planning (HCP).

Unemployment rate in urban areas reached 13.8%, while it stayed at 4% in the rural ones, explained the HCP, adding that the decrease benefited mainly urban people aged between 25 and 34 (-1 point) and graduates (-1.4%).

According to this department in charge of statistics, the rate of underemployment rose from 9.6% to 10% in the last two years.

It also added that the working population reached some 11.3 million people, notching up 0.4% compared to 2008, and that the number of job opportunities created stood at 113,900 (103,600 jobs in the city and 10,300 jobs in the countryside).
