Morocco is the first North African nation to sign an agreement to take part in Nato's Operation Active Endeavour that was launched after the Sept. 11 attacks in the US.

Under the operation, Nato ships and aircrafts will monitor and escort shipping across the Mediterranean to deter terrorist attacks.

Other non-Nato nations, including Russia, Ukraine, Albania and Israel, have already agreed to cooperate with the mission.
