Moroccans consume more electricity
  11/06/2008

Moroccans' consumption of electricity increased 6.8% in 2007, revealed the National Office of Electricity (ONE) in its 2007 balance sheet.

This increase was mainly due to increased sales of low-voltage electricity, which reached 20,541 GW/h, worth more than MAD 15 billion. A maximum consumption of energy was registered on August 1st, 2007, with 73,1 GW/h.

It is also due to the rise of rural consumption, after the Rural Electrification Program (PERG) initiated by ONE. Last year, the PERG led the electrification of 4,266 villages, that is 168,519 new rural households.

The number of customers has reached over 3.5 million, more than 3.1 million of whom are residential customers. Distributors constitute the bulk of ONE's customers of ONE, with 45.1% of sales.

Gross domestic consumption of electricity reached 22,608 GW/h in 2007, up to 7.1%, despite the sharp declines recorded in some areas. For the same period, ONE's electricity production decreased by 0,7%.
